Have all osteopaths in Israel received the appropriate training? The current situation in Israel is that anybody can open a clinic and call themselves an Osteopath. Therefore, in order to protect the public the IOA only recognises qualifications available from osteopathic educational institutions accredited by the GOsC (The General Osteopathic Council of Great Britain). These include some 19 Osteopathic teaching hospitals in the U.S. as well as specific colleges in Europe and Australasia. Courses that have not met the minimum standards set by the Israeli Osteopathic Association continue to function due to lack of legislation in Israel. It is up to the patient to enquire about the training received by each individual practitioner. Only IOA members can use the qualification MIRO (Member of the Israeli Register of Osteopaths) and display IOA certificate and logo. A list of registered osteopaths can be found on this website under "directory". Osteopaths from recognised schools can be identified by the following letters: UK:GOsC - General Osteopathic CouncilD.O. - Diploma of Osteopathy (only osteopaths trained in England) B.Sc. (Hons) Ost. - Bachelor of Science Honors degree in Osteopathy B.Sc. Ost. - Bachelor of Science degree in Osteopathy USA:D.O. - Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (only osteopaths trained in USA)Israel:MIRO - Member of the Register of OsteopathsOnly IOA members can use the qualification MIRO (Member of the Israeli Register of Osteopaths). The IOA accepts new members who have undergone training in osteopathic institutions acceptable to the standards of the General Osteopathic Council of Great Britain (GOsC). Membership is open to overseas osteopaths.
